Comment: Australian Federal Police Uniform Protection' provides protective security for the Australian Government at key locations throughout Australia and internationally. Uniform Protection members provide Counter Terrorism First Response (CTFR) security to many major Australian airports, foreign embassies and consulates and Australian Government buildings and installations. They also perform duties as Air Security Officers (ASO), a plain clothes division which provides an anti hijack capability to Australian registered aircraft. Officers within this section of the AFP are known as Protective Service Officers (PSO) and have law enforcement powers under the AFP Act 1979 Section 14 to stop, search and arrest individuals who commit certain federal offences. As part of the AFP’s multi-faceted approach to fighting 21st century crime, Uniform Protection Officers protect Commonwealth interests in Australia and overseas. PSO's perform duties which include, static point guarding, bomb appraisals, K9 bomb dogs, visitor control, alarm monitoring and response, mobile, foot and bike patrols, security consultancy services, counter terrorism first response at major and regional Australian airports. They also provide support for international peace keeping forces. Uniform Protection Officers are located at Commonwealth establishments including Parliament House in Canberra; the residences of the Prime Minister and Governor-General; foreign embassies and missions in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth; Australian Nuclear Scientific Technology Organisation infrastructure, Joint Defence Facilities (Pine Gap) and at major and regional Australian airports.
